The Young Journalist resumed its journalism classes in October with students from 10 Indian River County elementary schools. The program brings together over 80 academically gifted third, fourth and fifth graders in an after-school setting to learn the fundamentals of journalism and write about what they are curious about.
While teaching the basics of journalism and those who have influenced its various styles, The Young Journalist program addresses a lack of practice or understanding of basic writing mechanics.
The Young Journalist is supporting a 20% increase in attendance year over year.
Based on an April 2025 student survey, 92% indicated they have an A or B in English Language Arts (ELA).
According to Executive Director, Thomas Hardy, “Students love to explore their curiosities, from new movies and who developed them, to Cleopatra, the Queen of Drama. By incorporating fun, personalized, and engaging teaching strategies, we can ensure our young learners develop strong writing skills.
The advantages of early engagement in literary activities transcend the academic realm, impacting every aspect of a child’s growth and future potential.”
