You may not be aware that The Young Journalist (TYJ) is a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization mentoring third, fourth and fifth graders on reading, reading comprehension and writing. TYJ is a community partner with the School District of Indian River County, Florida mentoring over 150 students at 13 elementary schools. Their work product is printed in a magazine passed out to a limited audience just within the school district.

Fair Use - Most teaching- and paper-writing uses of images fall under the famous “fair use” provision (single use for scholarly purposes).  Note that their magazine features their “Scholarly Articles.”

According to Duke University, “Fair use allows copying of copyrighted material in an educational setting, such as a teacher or a student using images in the classroom it is still fair use to use them in an educational setting. It is fair use to use an image for teaching in person and online and for research, scholarship, and study.  It is fair use to display images to convey a scholarly argument. "

Basically, fair use allows academics to use even copyrighted materials a single time to a limited audiencewithout securing the permission of the copyright holder.
